Orchard Sprayer Equipment
CollectionSunnyvale History
TitleOrchard Sprayer Equipment
DescriptionBlack-and-white photograph of orchard sprayer equipment. Sprayers were first used to protect crops from insects. At the time, arsenates and lead were the chemicals used. In addition, a mixture of sulfur and lime was sometimes used to rid livestock of parasites. The Orchard (Bean) Sprayer in this photo was restored by Food Machine Corp (FMC) for Nick Mardesich. The Mardesich family owned orchards on both sides of Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road near Fremont Avenue. Mr. Mardesich sold or donated the sprayer to the Tikvica family, orchadists down the street from Mardesich near Remington Avenue. The Tikvica family then passed the sprayer on to Ralph Appio. Mr. Appio was not an orchardist, but a small land owner, mechanic and farm hand for other orchard owners. The sprayer is on display at the Barn, part of the Orchard Heritage Park Interpretive Exhibit.
